PrivatBank and Skype to Become Partners in Ukraine

KIEV, 8 December — PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest bank, is announcing a partnership with Skype in Ukraine. This partnership provides Ukrainian Skype users with easier access to the whole range of communication possibilities available via Skype including free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls to other Skype users, free instant messaging and low cost international calls to mobiles and landlines.

The agreement between PrivatBank and Skype has led to the creation of a co-branded version of the Skype software client, available for download at https://skype.privatbank.ua. The agreement also enables easy online payments from PrivatBank web properties and the ability for users in Ukraine to purchase Skype Credit from thousands of offline PrivatBank cash kiosks, ATMs, and branches. While calls to other Skype users are always free, Skype Credit is needed to make low cost calls to mobiles and landlines using Skype.

The Skype-PrivatBank partnership will allow Ukrainian Skype users to communicate more easily over the internet, as a range of new ways to pay for Skype Credit become available. Users can now pay via PrivatBank’s extensive terminal network, online via their web properties, and via SMS dedicated to mobile banking users of PrivatBank. Prior to this partnership there were few options to buy Skype Credit in Ukraine. Now it has become simpler to access Skype’s paid-for features, using Skype Credit to purchase everything from online numbers on which to receive phone calls to making low cost calls to mobiles and landlines worldwide, from as little as € 0.017 per minute to Portugal for example.

“Facing new economic realities, we consider it very important to offer our clients ways to significantly reduce expenses on voice, video, and instant messaging communications, for the most part making them free,” said PrivatBank chairman Aleksandr Dubilet. “I’ve been using Skype for a long time myself and I am certain that the development of this product in our country will let people communicate freely without unnecessary expense and let business, particularly small to medium sized, optimize their communication expenditures.”

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with PrivatBank to bring an even better Skype experience to Ukrainians all over the world,” said Enrico Noseda, Skype’s European Director of Market Development. “While many people in Ukraine already use Skype to stay in touch with family, friends and business contacts around the globe, PrivatBank is providing payment options and content that is both convenient and relevant, thus playing a key role enabling conversations for millions of Ukrainians around the world.”

“A reliable connection becomes even more important as time and distance becomes less of an obstacle for communication” added Oleksandr Vityaz, PrivatBank’s Director of Electronic Business. “It is easy now – one just needs to download Skype software from PrivatBank’s website to start contacting business partners all over the world to carry out video calls and conference calls for cost effective and convenient negotiations and meetings.”

About PrivatBank

With a network of 2,859 sales points and branch offices and 5,750 ATMs all over Ukraine, PrivatBank is the largest Ukrainian bank. It has 3 million customers and 500,000 corporate clients. According to 2008 image research conducted by GFK Ukraine, 88% of Ukrainians can name the leading bank and PrivatBank’s logo is recognized by 60%. More than 34% of respondents were clients of PrivatBank. The bank has also been acknowledged as the Ukrainian bank with the highest reputation by international research “Global Pulse 2008”. The high level of respect, trust and benevolence which Ukrainian customers feel towards the bank (71.75%) has allowed it to enter the top five leading international and Ukrainian companies which enjoy high levels from Ukrainians.

Consumers in Europe can pre-order the videophone from Skype's shop, priced at €269.95/£219.95, with shipment beginning next week. The videophone will also be available in retail outlets in Asia Pacific later this year.

Users can even join voice conferences, making the ASUS AiGuru SV1 an inexpensive, all-in-one voice and video conferencing solution for small businesses. Furthermore, the ASUS AiGuru SV1 also allows users to make and receive calls to and from fixed and mobile lines at really cheap rates.

"The AiGuru SV1 is Skype's first foray with a partner into the videophone category," said Manrique Brenes, Skype's director of business development and product management for consumer electronics. "With more than 25% of Skype-to-Skype calls including video, we know that video calling is an easy, accessible and relevant way for people to communicate. The videophone offers the benefits of video calling to a much wider audience, allowing friends and families to share their worlds face-to-face without being tied to a computer."

Free Calls Whenever, Wherever and Forever

With the ASUS AiGuru SV1, free unlimited video and voice calls can be made to anyone on Skype. Whether it's a father, child, or business colleague receiving a video or voice call, they do not have to be using a videophone; as long as they are connected to Skype - via a computer or a Skype-enabled device - the call will always be free. This enables people worldwide to make Skype-to-Skype calls either at home or the office whenever the need or mood strikes, without having to worry about cost. ASUS AiGuru SV1 users looking to make outgoing and receive incoming calls to and from fixed and mobile lines can subscribe to one of Skype's popular unlimited calling* subscriptions or purchase Skype credit to make outgoing calls at www.skype.com

The ASUS AiGuru SV1 also features a built-in microphone and speaker supporting exceptional sound quality. Users who wish to have privacy during their calls can use a standard mini-jack headset and microphone.

Easy to Set Up and Easy to Use

The ASUS AiGuru SV1 offers the quickest and easiest way to make free video calls - at no point is a computer or additional software required. Users can get up and running in three simple steps:

1.	Connect to a broadband connection, either wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable
2.	Sign-in with an existing Skype name or create a new one
3.	Start video calling

The videophone is as easy to use as it is to set up. Its icon-driven user interface and clean, clearly labeled button layout are designed to be immediately intuitive to users.

With its WiFi capability, small footprint and rechargeable battery power system, the ASUS AiGuru SV1 also offers convenience in its portability. The user is neither tied to a wall socket nor a computer during use, which means the videophone can be moved from room to room without hassle, and without interrupting or dropping a call.

* Unlimited calling: All calls are subject to Skype's fair usage policy which is set at 10,000 minutes per month (which equates to more than 5 hours of calling per day).
Get Skype and Start Calling From Salesforce CRM

Skype's "Click to Call" Toolbar Now Optimized for Salesforce CRM

SAN FRANCISCO - Salesforce.com's Dreamforce Conference - November 3, 2008 - Skype, the leading global internet communications company, today announced the integration of its "Click to Call" toolbar for Skype-enabled Salesforce CRM users.

Skype's simplified "Skype add-on for Internet Explorer" and "Skype extension for Firefox" toolbars have been optimized for use within Salesforce CRM. It allows users to seamlessly use Skype to call contacts in their Salesforce CRM application contact list. The announcement was made today at Dreamforce '08, salesforce.com's user and developer conference.

Skype's integrated "Click to Call" toolbar is now available for deployment by Salesforce CRM users. More information can be found on the Force.com AppExchange marketplace from Salesforce.com at www.salesforce.com/appexchange.

"Currently, more than 30 percent of our registered users are using Skype for business purposes," said Ian Robin, Director of Skype for Business. "The optimization of our toolbars for the salesforce.com community will enable small businesses to instantly communicate with customers or business partners in their database, while also viewing their relevant information."

"Skype is a must-have communication platform for small businesses worldwide," said Peter Kalmström, Product Manager for Skype Toolbars. "Saving money is just the start; they can also transfer files, set up video and conference calls and use instant messaging to build stronger relationships with their colleagues and customers."

To manage multiple Skype accounts, purchase and allocate Skype Credit or subscriptions, as well as monitor calling activity, businesses can also access the Skype for Business Control Panel (BCP), a free web-based tool, at www.skype.biz.

Using Skype with Salesforce CRM, customers can also quickly and easily set up conference calls with any combination of Skype users, landline and mobile phone numbers with up to twenty-five participants.

Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls are always free, while calls to landlines or mobiles are billed at low per-minute rates or with low cost unlimited* subscriptions. This can generate significant monthly savings for SMBs and improve overall employee productivity, without cumbersome installation packages or configuration requirements.

For a limited time, Salesforce CRM users will also be offered vouchers to make calls from Skype and to manage multiple Skype accounts during their initial 30-day trial period. Any salesforce.com customers that do not currently have Skype can download it from www.skype.com. The "Skype add-on for Internet Explorer" and "Skype extension for Firefox" are both included in the available versions of Skype for Windows - Skype 3.8 for Windows and Skype 4.0 for Windows Beta 2.

Low cost calls to landlines and mobiles abroad via Skype now available on 3 in the UK and Ireland

LONDON, 30 September 2008: Beginning in October, anyone using a Skype enabled 3 mobile phone (including the groundbreaking 3 Skypephone range, Nokia N95 and Sony Ericsson C902) in the UK and Ireland, will be able to go beyond making Skype-to-Skype calls and sending instant messages. People will now have the opportunity to use their 3 mobile phone to call landlines and mobiles abroad at very low rates using Skype.

This development represents added convenience and huge savings for 3 customers in the UK and Ireland when making international calls from their mobile phone. It also further liberates Skype from the home computer and gives users peace of mind on the amount they spend when calling abroad from their mobiles.

Access to Skype on 3 is already free – there are no internet connection charges, and no calls using Skype are charged to your mobile account. Skype-to-Skype calls and Instant Messaging will also continue to be free – regardless of where the end user is in the world. The new developments mean that people can enjoy Skype’s cheap rates from their mobile phones.

Scott Durchslag, COO of Skype, commented on this move: “Once again, Skype and 3 are delivering unprecedented value to those wanting to keep in touch with friends, family or business contacts abroad. This industry first will liberate individuals in the UK and Ireland to use 3 mobile phones to call whomever they please, regardless of where in the world they may be, and what device they are using.”

Kevin Russell, Chief Executive of 3 UK added: “Although 3 customers enjoy the best value international calling tariffs in the UK, we know that people are apprehensive about using their mobiles to call internationally, especially as international minutes aren’t typically included in mobile calling bundles. Giving 3 customers more ways to discover paid Skype offerings to call mobiles and landlines abroad will open up a new world via your mobile.”

The Next Generation of Internet Handset - 3 Skypephone S2

The next generation of internet-focussed mobile handsets has been unveiled today with the launch of the latest model of 3's acclaimed 3 Skypephone, the 3 Skypephone S2. Alongside free Skype calling and instant messaging, the new device brings internet services such as Facebook, Google and Windows Live Messenger to the front of the phone, making mobilised internet an easy-to-use and instantly accessible reality. Following the success of the original 3 Skypephone, the new 3 Skypephone S2 will be available for pre-order from 19th August, available to buy online from 27th August and in-store from 1st September.

New concept user-interface
The functionality of the 3 Skypephone S2 has been made instantly usable by the introduction of a revolutionary 'carousel' interface. The switcher key on the side of the handset enables you to quickly and intuitively move between applications from any screen on the phone, avoiding the need for the complex and fiddly menu systems that have made surfing the mobile internet difficult in the past.

The design of the 3 Skypephone S2 has also evolved since its predecessor. Now with elegant metal keys, a turned steel back and an overall premium finish. Technically the handset boasts an improved 2.2" QVGA screen, a 3.2 mega pixel camera, HSDPA capabilities and up to 4GB expandable memory.

Skype
The 3 Skypephone S2 packs a powerful punch. As with the first 3 Skypephone, Skype is fully integrated into the phone, allowing you to make Skype to Skype calls and send Skype instant messages to other Skype users anywhere in the world absolutely free, just as long as you are on any of 3's Pay Monthly price plans or your Pay As You Go credit with 3 is topped up. Your Skype contacts are fully integrated into your phonebook alongside all your regular contacts, and you won't be charged a penny extra to send instant messages to your Skype contacts.

'Dongle' capabilities
With 500,000 Mobile Broadband dongles already sold by 3 in the UK, the demand for broadband on the move is unquestionable and the new 3 Skypephone S2 brings these same 'plug and play' capabilities to handsets. 3 Skypephone S2 has built in modem drivers so you can use the cable that comes in the box to plug it into your laptop and get you onto the internet. No need for a fixed-line or a Wi-Fi hotspot; the phone will use the 3 network to get you online with HSDPA broadband speeds.

Facebook
As well as Skype, the 3 Skypephone S2 gives instant access to popular Internet services, including a pre-installed Facebook® application. Just click the icon on the home screen, sign in once and you can check your News Feed, see any unread messages or new friend requests and even update your status, all without clicking through to your full Facebook page.

RSS Feeds
The 3 Skypephone S2 also allows you to keep up with your favourite blogs and news services by letting you track up to 30 RSS feeds at once. Whether you're keeping up with the national news or your favourite celebrity glossy, your favourite titles will all be accessible from the menu carousel which can be opened up on any screen.

Internet service
All of the other core internet services that you've come to expect from a 3 handset are also built right into the 3 Skypephone S2. Never miss a message with easy access to free Windows Live Messenger and surf to your heart's content with Google search at your fingertips.

Kevin Russell, Chief Executive of 3 UK, said: "The first 3 Skypephone was about building one of the most popular Internet services, Skype, into the heart of the device. The 3 Skypephone S2 builds on this approach and brings a host of other popular Internet services to the front of the device.

"Using the Internet on your phone has sometimes been fiddly or complicated because of the limitations of traditional interfaces. With the 3 Skypephone S2 we've taken our long experience of putting the web onto mobiles and have used it to create a new concept in user interfaces. The switcher key gives you instant and intuitive access to all of the core services on the phone's menu carousel from every screen - making the mobile internet an easy to use reality."

"Following the successful launch of the 3 Skypephone last year, the response and demand has been phenomenal" said Scott Durchslag, COO, Skype. "With this beautiful new addition to the 3 Skypephone range of mobile devices, both Skype and 3's customers will continue to reap the benefits of being able to make free Skype to Skype calls and send free Skype instant messages while on the move."

"The new 3 Skypephone offers users an even richer mobile internet experience with fast broadband speeds. Skype on 3 is an innovative step in making Skype readily available whenever and wherever you go."

The 3 Skypephone S2 is free on any of 3's Mix & Match tariffs and costs £69.99 on Pay As You Go, and by signing up to one of 3's internet add-ons from £2.50 (pricing info below) you'll be covered to browse the mobile internet.

Go to www.three.co.uk or pop along to your local 3Store to find out more.

For more information on 3 Skypephone S2 please contact Ewa Evans or Becky Lockett on 020 7440 2379.

Skype Appoints New Chief Operating Officer

Luxembourg, July 1, 2008 - Skype today announced that it has named Scott Durchslag Chief Operating Officer. Scott brings 20 years of experience from Fortune 100 technology corporations, start-ups, and professional services to this newly created role. His post is effective immediately and he will report to Josh Silverman, Skype's president, who was recently appointed to the role March 24, 2008.

Scott was previously with Motorola where he spent 5 years on the top management team of the $25B Mobile Devices Business. Most recently, he was Corporate Vice-President of Global Product & Experience Invention, where he led product strategy, innovation, intellectual property, design, user interfaces, consumer experiences (music, video, imaging, productivity and mobile internet), partnerships, product marketing, and customer care. Previously, Scott was General Manager of South Asia where he built the region with the highest margins. He joined Motorola in 2002 as Chief Strategy Officer of the Personal Communications Sector, where he architected the turnaround strategy that doubled market share and revenues between 2002 and 2007.

"Innovation has always been a hallmark of Skype, and I want to innovate not only with the products we bring to market, but also with how we bring them to market," said Silverman. "Scott has an outstanding track record and will be able to help us apply best practices in staying ever more customer-focused and nimble, even while becoming larger."

Skype is the leader in online communications, revolutionizing the way people communicate through free and easy voice and video calling. The company has grown significantly since it was founded in 2003, and was acquired by eBay Inc. in September 2005. Today, the company has more than 309 million registered users around the world. In Q1 2008, Skype posted total revenues of $126 million, an increase of 61 percent over the prior year, while delivering a fifth consecutive quarter of profitability. Skype announced that since the company was launched in 2003, people around the world have talked to one another for more than 100 billion minutes using free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls.

"I believe in Skype not only because I've been a user since the early days, but also because I'm convinced the opportunities ahead for Skype are tremendous given how the world is changing," said Durchslag. "Skype combines superior multimedia communications technology with making the world a better place by cost-effectively connecting consumers on a global scale, as well as enabling smaller businesses to grow without the unnecessary fuel consumption, costs and carbon pollution generated by needless travel. It is truly a privilege to join the Skype team and help to build a great company."

At Motorola, Scott led an 800 person global organization with sites across the U.S., Europe and Asia. He championed delivering simple, rich consumer experiences and building high tier co-created multimedia devices through partnerships he forged with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Kodak. Prior to Motorola, Scott was involved in Grand Central, a Silicon Valley enterprise software startup funded by Benchmark Capital, and he was one of the early thought leaders on web services as a Managing Director at The Chasm Group. Scott started his career at McKinsey & Company where he served American and Asian technology clients for eight years in their New York and Greater China offices. Scott was elected a partner in only four years and launched or led several international locations. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Chicago and received his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Skype launches world's first non-stop Nomad

Luxembourg, May 5, 2008 - Skype today launches 'The Skype Nomad', an ambitious attempt to create a live, worldwide, human demonstration of how Skype can now be used anywhere and on the move.

Skype has recruited Australian writer Rebecca Campbell as 'The Nomad', to embark on a 33 day round-the-world trip across 15 countries including China, Australia, the US (including the state of Alaska), Italy and Estonia. The twist is that she must remain in perpetual motion for her entire journey - always moving, even when she's sleeping.

She will also need to use as many forms of transport as possible to complete her journey, from planes, trains and automobiles to hot air balloons, dog sleds and bumboats.

The Nomad will share her trip live on the internet as she travels, using a variety of Skype-enabled gadgets from 3 Skypephone to the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. Her blog will include the latest queue-jumping tips, how to keep moving when waiting to board an aircraft or when stuck in a traffic jam.

The web community will also be able to share her journey on her blog www.skype.com/go/nomad or her Facebook or MySpace pages. They will also be able to get in touch with Rebecca on Skype (Skypename: 'theskypenomad') and give her inside information on the countries she is visiting.

"This is a great way to show people how easy it is to use Skype wherever they happen to be," said Malthe Sigurdsson, Skype's creative director. "Our Nomad has to keep moving for a long time. The only downtime she will have is when she's on a flight or some form of transport that keeps her moving."

"I'm really excited about the trip but I'm sure it will be hard to keep moving," said Rebecca Campbell, The Skype Nomad. "The great thing is I have a whole online community to rely on who can guide me to make the right decisions on what I eat and how I keep moving in any of the 15 countries I'll be in. I am sure I'll need a holiday afterwards! Travelling can be a bit lonely but with Skype, I know I can stay in touch with my friends and family for free or very little and that's very reassuring."

Skype is known for having registered over 309 million users without using any traditional advertising. Skype Nomad continues the idea of using more innovative communications to demonstrate its unique product. Nomad will be the world's longest product demonstration.

For this challenge, Skype has teamed up with international disability and development charity Motivation, which works in low-income countries to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities. Skype will be making a donation to the charity and in addition further donations can be made via www.justgiving.com/Skypenomad.

Skype Tests Software for Mass-Market Mobile Phones

LUXEMBOURG, April 24, 2008 – Following recent moves to extend Skype™ conversations to a wide variety of new mobile and wireless devices, Skype is taking another major step as it continues to merge its internet communications software with mobile phones. Today, the company released a beta version of Skype for your mobile, a mobile “thin“ client that works on about 50 of the most popular Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

The beta version of Skype for your mobile is available worldwide with a feature set that includes chat, group chat, presence (seeing when your contacts are online), and receiving calls from Skype users, and through SkypeIn.* Additional features, which include the making of Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls from the mobile handsets, are initially supported in seven markets: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

"These are still the early days for making Skype calls on mobile phones, but we've already made great strides in this space," said Gareth O'Loughlin, general manager, mobile and hardware devices. "Among other things, we have a great relationship with 3, the mobile operator, which has brought the mobile Skype experience to eight markets through the 3 Skypephone and a range of other packages and phones. Skype for your mobile will expand the available options even further.

"While Skype for your mobile is in beta,“ O’Loughlin added, "it is an important time for us to listen to our users‘ feedback, be it through surveys or user forums. We need to hear what delights them and where there is still work to be done. But this product underscores our commitment to innovation and to putting Skype conversations in the pockets of today’s mobile masses."

With its beta version, Skype for your mobile enters a public testing phase that will help Skype gauge the response of technology-savvy users whose feedback will help tweak the offering. This phase is expected to last several months, after which a public version of the application will be made available to millions of mobile phone owners around the world.

There are two ways to get the beta version of Skype for your mobile: as a direct over-the-air download to a compatible mobile phone, or it can be downloaded to a computer and then transferred to the phone. For instructions, please visit www.skype.com/go/mobiledownload. This Web page also includes a directory of currently supported mobile phones and the list of markets where the full feature set is available. Additional phones and markets will be added over time.

* You will not incur charges from Skype to call or chat with friends on Skype. Skype will charge its regular very low SkypeOut rates when you call friends who are not on Skype or receive calls in your mobile handset from other Skype users or over SkypeIn.
When you call Skype-to-Skype or SkypeOut from your mobile, you are using mobile voice and data networks for which your mobile operator charges you for data usage and local mobile calling minutes. We highly recommend getting an unlimited data plan to use with Skype for your mobile. The mobile data network is used to sign onto Skype and to download your contacts, update presence and send/receive instant messages – so the longer you stay signed on, the more Skype contacts you have or the more you chat with another Skype user, the more you will use your mobile data plan.

To keep the application lightweight, Skype for your mobile works over standard mobile voice networks connections for the first and/or last legs of Skype, SkypeOut and SkypeIn calls – and over the internet for the rest.

Users in ‘3’ territories can already get free end-to-end Skype calling and chat on the 3 Skypephone and end-to-end Skype calling at no extra cost on all compatible contract phones from the ‘3’ mobile operator, as part of their subscription. For more information, please visit www.3skypephone.com.

The new subscriptions signal the first time Skype has offered a single, monthly flat rate for international calling to landline numbers in 34 countries.

The new subscriptions have no long-term contract. You can make calls whenever you want – at any time of the day, on any day of the week. From today, you can choose from three types of subscription – from unlimited calls to landlines in the country of your choice through to landlines in 34 destination countries worldwide.

Stefan Oberg, VP & GM telecoms at Skype said, “This move is a natural step for Skype. Skype was founded on the principle of making free voice and video calls available to people all around the world. And now we’re making it even easier for the Skype community to call their friends and family who are not yet on Skype. Our subscriptions give people an easy, hassle-free choice for how and when they want to catch up with their loved ones.”

Oberg continued, “For example if you live in London, for just €2.95 a month, you can call your grandmother in Poland, whenever you like, talk for up to six hours at a time, and not worry about how much it’s costing you. Your grandmother doesn’t need to understand the internet. You just use your Skype subscription to make the call and she just picks up the phone. And if you have friends and family spread over the world, you can reach them all for as little as €8.95 a month. When you combine the free features Skype is known for – from instant messaging to conference calling to video calls – with our subscriptions, it’s hard to find a better alternative.”

309 million people all over the world use Skype in all sorts of ways – whether it’s a weekly video call with a sister in Paris or sending an instant message to a college friend in Tokyo or calling a business contact overseas.

To purchase a subscription, simply go to skype.com/go/subscriptions for more details. If you purchase one of the new subscriptions for a 3-month or 12-month period before June 1st 2008, you will receive a further 33% discount.

About Skype’s calling subscriptions:

Skype users around the world can choose to subscribe to any one of the following calling subscriptions based on their individual calling needs:

You will only pay one flat monthly fee. There are no hidden costs or additional connection charges.

In parallel with our new subscriptions, Skype continues to offer its Pay As You Go option. Put as little as €10 on your Skype account and you can call whoever you want, whenever you want at very low rates.

*Unlimited calling: all calls are subject to Skype’s fair usage policy which is set at 10,000 minutes per month (which equates to more than 5 hours of calling per day). Calls to premium, non-geographic and other special numbers are excluded.

About Skype

Millions of people every day use Skype software to communicate with others through free voice and video calls, as well as instant messages. Skype's 309 million registered users have made more than 100 billion minutes worth of free Skype-to-Skype calls. Many people also use SkypeOut™ or one of our global subscriptions to save money when calling landlines and mobiles at home and abroad.
More than half of European SMEs poised to make more conference calls and use video in 2008

27th March 2008 - New research from Skype has revealed high adoption rates for new technology such as conference calling and video conferencing amongst European SMEs. More than 50 per cent of companies questioned are planning to increase the integration of conference-calling and video-conferencing technologies into their business in the coming 12 months.

A third of companies surveyed already use conference calls while a further 40% see the potential for incorporating it into their business. Two thirds of companies already using conference calling do so at least once a week and 60% predict that they are likely to increase use over the next 12 months.

There is a similar pattern to video-conferencing use. Despite being a relatively new feature, more than 40% can see the potential of video-conferencing use in business. Skype’s internal data also suggest that 30% of all Skype calls now involve video.

The research suggests that small businesses are embracing conference calling and video conferencing as a method of communicating both internally and with their customers and new prospects. Key benefits of this approach have included minimising travel, facilitating communication, improving communication and reducing costs. With video conferencing, the addition of non-verbal communication such as body language is also an important factor.

In fact, of the SMEs questioned who were not current users of video conferencing many said they would be more likely to use it if it was better quality and not expensive. Making calls between Skype users is free for anyone with a computer and broadband internet connection. To start making video calls on Skype incurs minimal set-up costs (buying a webcam for example) and once the hardware is installed, the running costs are zero. Thanks to top quality imaging ability which is available for free when you download Skype today, video conferencing is set for huge growth in 2008.

“Saving money is just the start," said Stefan Oberg, VP and general manager, telecoms, at Skype. "Skype is a great tool for businesses – especially smaller businesses who thrive on productivity while at the same time keeping an eye on the bottom line. Being able to see your customer on video for free when you are talking to them is a massive benefit and made even better because Skype is so simple to use.”

“Most successful businesses are about relationships," said Richard Martin from Cotswold Woollen Weavers, a Skype for Business user. "And making business relationships work when you’re running a fast-growth company can be tough. As a majority of all communication is non-verbal being able to see the people you’re working with using Skype video calling is a real asset. It allows you to be flexible and doesn’t discriminate in terms of where your customers are based. More importantly, because you can see your customers this reduces the need for face to face meetings so you have more time to work on new areas of you business whilst looking after your customer base.”
Silverman, currently CEO of Shopping.com, an eBay company, brings more than nine years of experience in running hyper-growth global consumer Internet companies. Silverman will join Skype on March 24, 2008 and report directly to John Donahoe, President and CEO-elect of eBay Inc. Michael van Swaaij, who was appointed interim CEO in October 2007, will stay actively involved with Skype.

”We’re honored and excited to welcome Josh to Skype as CEO. He has an outstanding track record of entrepreneurial leadership and managing diverse, fast-growing businesses,” said Donahoe. “We look forward to working with him as Skype continues to innovate and build out its next stage of growth.”

”I am very pleased to be joining Skype’s dynamic team at this important time in the company’s history,” said Silverman. “Skype is an incredibly exciting company. Our opportunities are tremendous as we continue to bring Skype to more people around the world, while finding new ways to add value and helping users continue to set their conversations free using Skype.”

100 Billion Skype-to-Skype Minutes Served

Skype’s 276 million registered users around the world have now talked with one another for more than 100 billion minutes (100,000,000,000) using free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls since Skype launched in 2003.

This mind-boggling number equates to one minute of free talk for every man, woman and child that has ever walked the Earth!

To put this into further perspective, Skype has only been in business for about 4.5 years (approximately 2,365,200 minutes). Yet people have used Skype to talk for more than 69,444,444 days (more than 190,258 years). Go back 150,000 years, if a woolly mammoth and a sabre-toothed tiger had started talking for free on Skype, they would still be chatting away today… and with 40,258 years to go!

It took McDonald's nearly 40 years to serve 100 billion hamburgers (from 1955 to 1994). And it’s taken Skype just over four years to hit the 100 billion free minutes mark which is pretty amazing!

For even more perspective on this milestone, check out the Skype Blog at

Skype Expands Mobile Strategy at 2008 International CES

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH: HILTON #5121), January 7, 2008 – Today, at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show, Skype is setting conversations free and making them mobile with its announcement of support for a wide variety of new wireless devices and accessories. By doing so, it is delivering a new mobile Skype™ experience for consumers and small business users wherever they are.

“Internet access is rapidly spreading beyond just the home or office computer, and a world increasingly blanketed with wireless connections is giving Skype conversations the freedom to travel almost anywhere,” said Gareth O’Loughlin, Skype's general manager of mobile and hardware devices. “With the introduction of new mass-market devices at CES that support Skype, millions of people around the world will now be able to leave the desk behind, put Skype in their pocket and take their conversations with them. I think that is immensely liberating.”

Skype has worked closely with a number of its hardware and software partners to bring
Skype functionality to an increasing number of mobile products that use a variety of
wireless network connections to access the internet. This includes offering mobile support for Skype’s free instant messaging and voice calling among the more than 246 million registered Skype users, as well as its premium features, such as SkypeOut™ (cheap calls from Skype to traditional landlines or mobile phones anywhere in the world) and SkypeIn™ (a personal and portable Skype number that people can call you on wherever you are in the world).

Some of the new wireless devices and accessories being demonstrated at the 2008
International CES that make Skype mobile include:

• 3 Skypephone – Introduced together with mobile operator 3, this new affordable
mass market 3G wireless handset lets users make Skype-to-Skype calls and send
Skype instant messages from their mobile phone to other Skype users no matter
where they are. The 3 Skypephone is available in the UK, Australia, Austria, Denmark,
Ireland, Italy and Sweden, and will soon be available in Hong Kong.

• Freetalk® Wireless Stereo Headset – This new Wireless Stereo Headset, enabled by
the new AvneraAudio™ technology, delivers CD-quality sound and the freedom of
hands-free Skype calls at any time. It offers superior range (up to 20 meters)
compared to technologies such as Bluetooth, freeing you from your desk to make
and receive the full range of Skype calls while moving throughout your home or
office.

• Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices – Mobile users will be able to make Skype voice
and video calls and send instant messages on the move, while harnessing the PClike
performance of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) based on Intel low-power
processors and chipsets. This new category of small, truly mobile consumer devices
with WiMAX and WiFi capabilities will enable free Skype-to-Skype voice and video
calls and cheap SkypeOut calls to be made on open wireless networks.

• Nokia N810 Internet Tablet – The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet is a sleek, pocket-sized
WiFi device with a slide-out keyboard which frees Skype users from their desktop,
allowing Skype-to-Skype conversations and SkypeOut calls to take place in any WiFi
connection, including thousands of Boingo Wireless and Earthlink WiFi hotspot
locations.

• mylo™ Communicator – Skype comes pre-installed on Sony’s mylo personal
communicator, COM-2, so users can call or instant message any other Skype user all
over the world for free over an open WiFi connection. Users of the mylo can also
make cheap SkypeOut calls and receive SkypeIn calls.

• PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) handheld entertainment system (PSP-2000 series) –
With a simple system software update slated for late January, PSP users worldwide
will be able to make free voice calls to other Skype users, see which friends are
online and available to talk, and – with the purchase of Skype Credit – make cheap
SkypeOut calls and receive SkypeIn calls.

A sneak peek of the mobile Skype experience is available for media at Skype’s booth during ShowStoppers @ CES 2008 at the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel from 6-10 PM PST on Monday, January 7, 2008, as well as at Skype’s PR Suite in the Las Vegas Hilton (Suite #5121) throughout the week.

Skype to Support Internet Voice and Video Calls on Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH: HILTON #5121), January 7, 2008 — At the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, Skype announced its plans to collaborate with Intel Corporation to develop a new mobile Skype™ experience for Mobile Internet Devices (MID) based on Intel low-power processors and chipsets. MIDs are a new category of small, truly mobile consumer devices enabling a PC-like Internet experience, coupled with the capability to communicate with others, enjoy entertainment, and access information on the go.

The collaboration builds on the familiarity and ease of use of Skype software and makes that experience mobile. MID users will be able to make Skype voice and video calls and send instant messages on the move, while harnessing the PC-like performance of Intel’s new ultra-mobile platform. MID devices with WiMAX and WiFi capabilities will enable free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls and cheap SkypeOut™ calls – calls from Skype to landline and mobile phone numbers anywhere in the world at low per-minute rates – to be made on open wireless networks.

“Many of the more than 246 million Skype users around the world are increasingly mobile and want to stay connected on the go,” said Gareth O’Loughlin, Skype's general manager of mobile and hardware devices. “Making the richer Skype experience available on mobile devices partly hinges on the need for more processing power, which in turn tends to shorten battery life. Intel’s focus on lowering power consumption helps us minimize that conundrum, underscoring our evolution beyond the desktop. And it‘s good news to anyone who has found themselves missing Skype on the road.”

As part of this effort, Skype will enable its software to run on the small, thin and light ultra-mobile MID devices with touch-screen LCDs, which are powered by Mobile Internet Linux. With the performance offered by Intel’s low-power processors and chipsets, some MID devices will even support mobile video calls over Skype.

“The emergence of Mobile Internet Devices represents an exciting new user experience,” said Pankaj Kedia, Director of Global Ecosystem Programs for the Ultra-Mobility Group at Intel Corporation. “Intel’s low-power technologies, combined with Skype’s optimized software, will enable MID users to easily stay in touch with their family and friends wherever they go.”

Skype is working with Intel to deliver its application software on the Mobile Internet Linux platform (www.moblin.org) through Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). By bundling the Skype software on their devices, consumer electronics manufacturers can provide consumers with a rich internet communications experience – instant messaging, group chat, voice and video calls – right out of the box.

The first implementation of the Skype software for Mobile Internet Linux on Intel-based MID products is expected to be made available during the first half of 2008.
